    Coffee Conversations: May 2020

Ready for a break from the surreal reality we're currently living in? Grab a coffee and let's chat!

Finally, spring is here. So instead of staying home and cooped up, I can actually venture outside and enjoy the backyard. Have you been able to get outside for a walk and some fresh air?

We tackled the pool problem — the house we bought had a giant 22-foot circular pool in the yard. Since we bought the house in winter, the previous owners couldn't remove it.

With the pool gone, my thoughts are dancing with garden dreams. I'm excited to plant a vegetable and herb garden back there!

    • Repotting indoor plants
    • Patio doors open with two cats looking outside

In the meantime, I've settled for repotting my indoor plants. My snake plant and pilea peperomioides were desperate for bigger homes!

My roommate and I have also filled our time with home workouts, as I mentioned last month. Here are a few favorites from this month:

    • Home workouts with double unders and burpees
    • Home workouts with dumbell snatches and v-ups
    • Home workout with double unders, jumping lunges, and jump squats

    Current favorites:

    Supporting local whenever possible!

I've always been a big supporter of LOCAL, small businesses. Especially during this crazy time, we're doing our best to support local restaurants and businesses when we can.

    • Takout from JL Beers Fargo
    • Takeout from The Shack on Broadway in Fargo
    • Takeout from Thai Orchid in Moorhead MN
    • Donuts and coffee from Sandy's Donuts in Fargo

That means some crazy good eats! Here are a few faves we've had this month:

    Pounds

    JL Beers

    Sandy's Donuts & Coffee

    Thai Orchid

    Brew Bird

    Related: one hour of burpees.

Ugh. Thanks to my roommate, we signed up for a free friendly competition with just one workout, one movement. 60 minutes of burpees.

But for a good cause: 1 hour of burpees, then order takeout from a local restaurant!

    • Three women in the sun, sweaty after a workout
    • Takeout from Pounds and Brew Bird in Fargo ND

We rallied a group from the gym to do it with us over Zoom. And then we went HAM on some local favorites!

Annnd...they're doing it again next year. So, save the date for May 1, 2021?

    SunButter on-the-go

SunButter sent me some of their new on-the-go packs to try out. Paired with a banana, they're my new favorite midday snack!

SunButter on the go pack with a banana

Funnily enough, I'm not actually going anywhere... they're just convenient to pull out and use without having to think of portions. If I grabbed a full jar of SunButter? I'd be elbow deep in the thing before I even know it. I can't be the only one. 😉

    What I'm currently reading

While we're all staying home, members from my gym decided to connect in a new way...through a book club! So this month, that has influenced my reading.

So far with the book club, any genre and book are fair game. Each person nominates a read and we choose via a random number generator.

I've never been part of a book club, so hopefully this broaden's my horizons while still giving me flexibility in what I read.

    • Disappearing Earth by Julia Phillips — First book club pick! To be honest, I don't think it was a great choice given our current situation with the pandemic. It's a little too bleak, and all of us felt like the ending was NOT earned.
    • Made Whole Made Simple: Learn to Heal Yourself Through Real Food Healthy Habits by Cristina Curp — I wrote about this cookbook (but let's be real, also BOOK) before, but I came back to it as I didn't finish. But man, am I eating it up now! There's SO much information in this book. It's worth a buy, even if you don't use it for the recipes! (But let's be honest, there's some GOOD food in here.)
    • 30 Lessons for Living: Tried and True Advice from the Wisest Americans by Karl Pillemer — I'm about 30% of the way through this book, our next book club read. One thing that's a little weird for me—I'm listening to this as an audiobook! So far, there's definitely some interesting advice to be had in this book. But I also feel like I've heard a lot of this advice before. Still, just because I have doesn't mean it's not worth sharing.

    Shareworthy internet reads

    • Stressed? Here's how it affects your body, and some things you can do about it.
    • Maybe there's a benefit to be found in all this solitude.
    • Excess sugar isn't great for us. So why is fruit okay?
    • PSA: Never, ever, ever pour oil down the drain. Here's what to do instead.

    New posts this month

    • Skillet Collard Greens with Ham Recipe
    • Carrot and sweet potato casserole
    • Whey-free chocolate protein pancakes
    • Stack of macaroons

    Message from the Kitty Committee

    • Two cats sitting in front of a screen door looking outside
    • Cat on a table with a plate of food balanced on his back

Sunshine is one of the best feelings in the world. Soak it in!
