A charcuterie board recipe with a twist - this Nordic Charcuterie Board blends Scandinavian and Norwegian cuisines in one shareable, snackable board.

I don't know many people who don't get excited about a charcuterie board! They're a relatively easy way to feed a crowd or put together a no-cook meal that LOOKS fancy.

I've come to enjoy putting together themed charcuterie boards - see my Valentine's Day charcuterie board. It's one more way to add creativity and cohesiveness to a grazing board!

Nordic-inspired: the charcuterie version of a smörgåsbord

While charcuterie boards originate from France, so many cultures have their own version. For Scandinavian cultures, it's the buffet-style smörgåsbord of Sweden.

While a Swedish smörgåsbord features multiple dishes, hot and cold, served up like a potluck, I see many similarities between modern-day charcuterie boards.

So why not take inspiration and make a true, Nordic-themed charcuterie board?

Drawing on Swedish, Scandinavian, and Norwegian cuisine, I've put together the quintessential Nordic charcuterie board!

(Don't worry, I left out the lutefisk.)

What to include on a Nordic charcuterie board

The recipe below and the photos of the boards I crafted for this post will list specific foods, but there are SO many things you can include on your Nordic charcuterie board.

Below is a list of ideas, all inspired by Swedish, Norwegian, Scandinavian cuisine.

    Meats and charcuterie

It's a charcuterie board, right? So one absolute MUST-HAVE is charcuterie!

    • Smoked salmon
    • Gravlax
    • Cold cuts
    • Hard-boiled eggs or deviled eggs
    • Liver pate
    • Smoked sausages

    Cheeses

    • Cheddar
    • Jarlsberg
    • Stilton

    Fruits and vegetables

    • Watercress
    • Lemon slices
    • Pickles
    • Dates
    • Figs
    • Beets and/or Pickled beets
    • Carrots
    • Cucumber
    • Blanched asparagus
    • Apples/Pears
    • Chives
    • Dill

    Jams, spreads, and dips

    • Lingonberry jam
    • Horseradish
    • Mustard
    • Sour cream

How to style a charcuterie board

I dive in-depth on this topic in my post How to Build an Epic Gluten Free Charcuterie Board, but I can give you a few cliffs notes if you'd rather not read the whole deep dive post!

    - Keep food groups apart. Don't have two different types of meat next to each other, two cheeses next to each other, etc.

    - Fill in gaps with herbs, nuts, and other "extras".

    - A small dish or jar of dip/spread/jam creates a great focal point!

    - Your board doesn't need excessive variety. 1-2 of each food group (cheese, meat, etc.) works well! Don't go overboard.
