Ingredients and instructions
Honey - Any honey will work here, even the honey that's already in your pantry that has crystallized over time!
Note that certain honeys can have different flavor undertones, such as clover honey.
Mustard - I use stoneground mustard for this recipe, but feel free to use Dijon or even a blend of the two!
Mayonnaise - Mayonnaise keeps this sauce creamy and dippable, but too much can overshadow the honey mustard flavor.
I always opt for a super thick mayo like Primal Kitchen mayo, but note that olive oil- or avocado-based mayos may have a stronger flavor.
Hot sauce - Use whatever hot sauce you like! I used Frank's RedHot Original, since it's widely available and we almost always have a bottle in our fridge.
However, you can change up the spice level or overall flavor just by swapping out for a different hot sauce.
How to make hot honey mustard sauce
Truth: this recipe isn't as simple as mixing everything together.
I tested that out, and in our side-by-side taste test, THIS is the version that clearly won.
And I'd rather publish the BEST hot honey mustard sauce than a slightly faster hot honey mustard sauce.
That said, you can whip up a batch of this sauce in less than 10 minutes, and it keeps well in the fridge!
1. Reduce hot sauce and honey on stovetop
Add the hot sauce and honey to a saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring to boil, then reduce to a simmer, whisking occasionally.
Keep simmering until the mixture has reduced by about ¼.
2. Whisk in mustard and mayonnaise
Remove the hot sauce mixture from heat and let cool slightly. Whisk in the mustard and mayonnaise.
Taste, and adjust to fit your needs.
And that's it!

FAQs
Yes! I used Frank's Red Hot Sauce for this recipe since it's easy to find. But to crank up the heat, use a spicier hot sauce.
Nope, feel free to use Dijon mustard if you'd like. I prefer the flavor of stoneground mustard, but I tested this sauce with both and they each work just fine!
Technically, no. This'll taste just fine if you whisk everything together.
However, I was really after the BEST hot honey mustard sauce, that worked really well as a dip (read: coats whatever you're dipping well and doesn't just slough off), and I definitely feel that the short stint on the stovetop made an overall better sauce.
