Cottage cheese makes a great high protein snack, and blending it means you can use it to add a little protein boost to all sorts of recipes like Cottage Cheese Egg Salad and my favorite High Protein Overnight Oatmeal with Cottage Cheese!
Typically, ½ cup of low fat cottage cheese contains at least 14 grams protein for 80 calories. That's a better protein per calorie ratio than Greek yogurt!
If the curds in cottage cheese throw you off, blending it is worth a try to still get the protein boost of cottage cheese without the texture.

Best cottage cheese for blending

Your ingredients list: all you need is cottage cheese!
I have two go-to brands that I consistently grab for blended cottage cheese: Good Culture and Nancy's.
In both cases, the low fat (2% fat) or whole milk (4%) versions work great for blending!
It's worth noting, though, that whole milk (4%) cottage cheese will be creamier.
How to make Blended Cottage Cheese
All you need is cottage cheese + a method of blending it.
You've got 3 options:
- High-powered blender
- Food processor
- Immersion blender

Step 1: Add cottage cheese to a high-powered blender or food processor.

Step 2: Blend until completely smooth. You may have to scrape down the sides of the bowl if using a food processor or immersion blender.
I usually use my Vitamix, a high-powered blender I've had for well over 10 years! It works fast and easy.
Mix-ins and Topping Ideas
Whether you go the sweet or savory route, you can add mix-ins or topping to blended cottage cheese the same way you would for yogurt!
Sweet topping ideas:
- Honey
- Maple Syrup
- Nut or seed butter
- Protein powder
- Fruit (berries, apples, mango, banana, etc.)
- Toasted nuts
- Hemp seeds
- Chia seeds
- Granola
- Cinnamon (or other spices like nutmeg or clove)
- Lemon juice/zest
- Orange zest
Savory topping ideas:
- Fresh herbs
- Roasted garlic
- Sun-dried tomatoes
- Cucumber
- Sesame seeds
More uses for blended cottage cheese
When blended, cottage cheese becomes smooth and super creamy, making it a wonderful substitute for yogurt, cream cheese, or sour cream.
I definitely wouldn't suggest just swapping those ingredients without knowing that the end result might be altered a bit (cheesecake, I'm looking at you), but this smooth version of cottage cheese can easily be eaten as a bowl, used as a base for dips, or drizzled on tacos instead of sour cream.
Likewise, I've been putting cottage cheese in my smoothies like this Peanut Butter Protein Smoothie as a creamy, protein-packed thickener.
Knowing there's an extra protein kick with cottage cheese has me getting super creative with ways I can add it or substitute it into new recipes and staples.

Blended Cottage Cheese FAQs
Try just letting the blended cottage cheese chill in the fridge for a bit. As it sits, it should thicken up a bit!
Otherwise, this may have to do with the quality of your ingredients. My go-to gottage cheese brands are Good Culture and Nancy's, but I know Daisy works well too.
I usually grab low fat (2%) cottage cheese and love the results. Whole milk (4%) cottage cheese will be creamier and thicker.
However, if you're using 1% or no fat cottage cheese, blending it will probably end up thinner.
I also can't speak to brands that I haven't used, so even low fat versions of some brands may end up watery as well.
Yes! A few brands, Good Culture included, sell a lactose-free whole milk cottage cheese.
We don't have it in our area, unfortunately, so I haven't gotten to try it, but everything else Good Culture makes is fantastic so I trust it's good!
The easy answer: you probably didn't blend it enough.
If you're using a food processor or immersion blender, you might have to scrape the sides and give it another whirl or two before you end up with truly smooth blended cottage cheese.
With my Vitamix, I find that it sometimes takes 1-2 minutes to get fully creamy and smooth as I like it. There's a point where it looks pretty good...but then the magic happens and it's velvety smooth.
If you've tried refrigerating the blended cottage cheese but it's still not thick enough, next time you can try draining some of the liquid off of the curds before blending.
I'm not a big fan of that option, because you're also draining off a portion of the nutrient value! But it'll work in a pinch!
Recipe Ideas for Blended Cottage Cheese
I've been using blended cottage cheese for several different recipes lately! I don't have published versions of all of them, but I'll share several different ideas for using this ultra-creamy cottage cheese in your own creations.
First, High Protein Overnight Oats with Cottage Cheese is now a weekly staple for my meal prep. Paired with some turkey sausage, it's my go-to breakfast that's SUPER high in protein! Cottage Cheese Baked Oats makes another great breakfast option.
More ideas:
- Fruit or veggie dip, like my High Protein Cottage Cheese Fruit Dip my spouse raves about!
- Use for egg salad (check out my recipe for Cottage Cheese Egg Salad), chicken salad, or potato salad instead of mayo
- Smoothies
- Serve with toppings as a "yogurt" bowl - or a smooth version of Savory Greek Cottage Cheese Bowls!

Description
Creamy, smooth, and delicious, blending cottage cheese propels this high-protein dairy product to all new possibilities. Visit the blog post above for all sorts of recipe and use ideas!
Ingredients
- 1 16-oz container cottage cheese (4% or 2% milkfat) (My favorite brands are Good Culture and Nancy's)
Instructions
- Add cottage cheese to a high-powered blender, food processor, or tall container for use with an immersion blender. Blend using your preferred method, scraping down sides with a rubber spatula as needed, until cottage cheese has become completely smooth.
- Use blended cottage cheese immediately, or add back to its original container for storage in the fridge, following the original package expiration as a guide for storage.
Notes
Only use 4% or 2% milkfat cottage cheese (whole milk or low fat) for blended cottage cheese for the best, thickest texture. Whole milk (4%) cottage cheese will be thickest, but good quality brands of low fat (2%) cottage cheese work well too!
