Refresh your routine with one of these flavor- and protein-packed cottage cheese toast ideas!
Starting with a slice of toast and a smear of cottage cheese, this post has several options for either a sweet or savory spin.

Cottage cheese toast: protein-packed meal or snack!
I'm a pretty big fan of cottage cheese, using it in everything from high protein overnight oatmeal or Cottage Cheese Baked Oats for breakfast to cottage cheese egg salad for lunch.
Cottage cheese makes a fantastic high protein snack or ingredient, packing 14g of protein in each ½ cup!
Smear that ½ cup of cottage cheese on a slice or two of toast, and you've got the makings of an excellent snack.
The best part of "recipes" like this are ALL the different ideas for customizing the flavor, so I've compiled my favorite sweet and savory cottage cheese toast ideas so you can change it up every time you reach for the cottage cheese!
The base: which toast to pick
Picking a type of toast to use is entirely up to you.
However, just keep in mind that you can definitely alter how hefty your cottage cheese toast creation is with the toast you pick.
Average slice of bread, gluten free or otherwise? One slice might make a good snack.
Thick slice of artisan sourdough? One slice might make a meal.
Or, grab an English muffin if that's your jam!
Want to skip the bread entirely and use roasted sweet potato slices for "sweet potato toast"? You do you.

What cottage cheese should I use?
I have two go-to brands that I consistently grab for blended cottage cheese: Good Culture and Nancy's.
In both cases, I tend to go for the low fat versions (2% fat), since I currently use cottage cheese as a way to reach my protein goals and I don't want as many calories hitching a ride.
It's worth noting, though, that low fat cottage cheese will be a little thinner than the full fat versions.
I also veer away from fat free cottage cheese, since I think the flavor just isn't there.

Blended cottage cheese as a spread
If you're worried that the texture of cottage cheese might get to you, give blended cottage cheese a try.
Very simply, it's cottage cheese that you blend until it's super smooth and creamy.
As a bonus, it makes an excellent spread!
A piece of toast with blended cottage cheese + jam makes a perfect combo. But of course, you can use blended cottage cheese for any of these cottage cheese toast ideas!

Another option: Baked cottage cheese toast!
Wait, baked cottage cheese? Yes. I was a little hesitant to try this at first, too.
But, it works. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but you can bake the cottage cheese until it's warm and melty.
You could use this idea to make, for example, "pizza" cottage cheese toast with pizza sauce or an apple pie version with baked apples and cinnamon.
If you'd like to give it a try, here are some instructions for the air fryer or the oven:
Air Fryer: 400 degrees F for 8 minutes - long enough for the cottage cheese to start melting and brown slightly.
Oven: 400 degrees F for 10-12 minutes - until the cottage cheese has started melting and has browned slightly.
In both cases, start with toast, not untoasted bread. Otherwise the bread will just get soggy.

Tips and Tricks for Successful Toast
- Always toast the bread. Otherwise, the bread will get too soggy to eat efficiently.
- Assemble just before eating. Even with the bread toasted, it'll get soggy if left to sit too long!
- Some ingredients, like avocado, jam/jelly, or arugula/spinach/salad greens are better used under the cottage cheese. But in most cases, cottage cheese gets spread on first!
- Start small with seasonings. Cinnamon, everything bagel seasoning, and chili powder can quickly overpower everything else, so be mindful! You can always add more.
- A sprinkle of sea salt can make a HUGE difference! Sea salt or flaky salt elevates the flavor of almost every fresh vegetable out there. If your toast feels like it's missing something, try a little salt! (But don't go too crazy, as cottage cheese can already be a bit salty.)
